![]() My Experience at the Viking Classic By mustang6560 on 7/18/11
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience volunteering at the Viking Classic in Madison, Mississippi and I would encourage every golf fan to volunteer at a PGA Tour event at least once in their life. Admittedly, the main reason I volunteered was so I could play Annandale Golf Club in the volunteer golf outing in September. But, I was also looking forward to being inside the ropes of a PGA Tour event.
Originally, I was told I would be helping spot balls in the rough and making sure the crowd didn't move or talk during a players swing. I was slightly concerned it would be a long two days. But, to my delight, I ended up operating the Shot Link laser which kept me very engaged. The person who was operating the laser was not going to be working Sunday so he decided to train me to do it. Every hole had a Shot Link laser behind the green and the par 4s and 5s had a laser in the fairway and the par 5s had a second laser near the layup point. I was in charge of the Shot Link laser in the short position on hole 5 so every time a player hit, I had to shoot the location of their shot. The distance was uploaded in real time to the Shot Link mobile headquarters near the clubhouse and if there were any questions, they would call in over the radio "Base to five short". "Five short, go ahead." The person working with me had a grid of the entire hole and his job was to provide the coordinates of each shot so the mobile unit could cross reference the laser. Every so often, we would have to re-calibrate the location of the laser by shooting three predetermined reference points. I was really glad I was asked to work the laser because it made the time fly by and it made me feel like I was actually contributing to the tournament. I helped record all of the shot data from hole 5 on Saturday and Sunday. I ended up working a 12 hour shift on Saturday because several weather delays pushed the finish of the second round into the morning. To recap my experience, I picked the top seven things I learned. Enjoy. Top 7 Things I Learned from Volunteering on the PGA Tour
photo [ comments ] I have volunteered for a few Adams Tight Lie events and really like being around the "pro's".....most are very thankful and appreciative of the volunteers.....look forward to it every year... 7/18/11
I volunteer on the driving range every year at the Champions tour event here in Houston. I love, love, love it. I like the range, because you get to be pretty close to the players, and it's awesome to watch those guys hit balls. Plus, you get a free round at a tour-level course. I'm lucky in that the company I work for is the title sponsor of the event, so I don't have to pay for my polo or hat, and I actually get paid time off from work for 1 day during the week to volunteer. That being said, I would pay to do it if I had to. I have even considered paying to volunteer at the Shell Houston Open PGA event, because most of the same people work on the range. 7/18/11
And mustang, my experience with the Champions tour guys is no different than your experience in mississippi. Some of them are complete a-holes, but way more are super nice, and really appreciate the volunteers. The cool thing about working the same spot a few years in a row, is that some of the players and caddies remember you. 7/18/11
good stuff...shot link operator would definitely be up there on cool volunteer jobs...i did concessions one year at the travelers championship...was working a register for parts of the day including the close...i think we were a few dollars off and they were jerks about it...you're charging bucks for a hot dog!...who cares... i think QUIET PLEASE sign holder on the 18th would be tops... 7/18/11
@Mustang6560: Thanks for your insights on volunteering. If Michigan ever gets another PGA event, I will have to consider signing up. 7/18/11
I got to be a walking scorer for four years when the Nationwide Tour Championship was being held at RTJ Capitol Hill, and absolutely loved it. I am in a different job now, but thinking about taking time off this year to do it for the LPGA event here. 7/18/11
if you volunteer for the LPGA even here in SG, they allow all of the volunteers to come back at a later time to play the course for free. i'm definitely signing up next year because it's the top ranked course in the country. 7/19/11

Very interesting. But now when it takes 20 minutes for shotlink to update, or they show a 1-shot to green on a par 4, I'll know it was some poor volunteer who is responsible, probably off with a cool one. The image of Bill Murray sticks in my mind. 7/19/11
