By mustang6560 on 4/25/12
Is Ginni Rometty, the female CEO of IBM, a member of Augusta National Golf Club?
The above question, which was asked prior to, during, and after the 76th playing of the Masters, was
So, leave it to a pesky shareholder to rehash the controversy with the first live question at the annual shareholders meeting.
“I’m certainly very happy about our CEO and be anxious to know if she’s a member of Augusta?” the unidentified male shareholder asked at the meeting in North Charleston, South Carolina. “No response is required,” he added.I guess we'll have to wait until next year to find out if Ginni is the first female member when the issue of Augusta's all-male membership is brought up again.

The letter I wish Virginia Rometty had written:
With the smell of spring in the air and the Augusta National just around the corner, I am enjoying the prospect of watching this year’s competition in person. Perhaps we might spend a few minutes catching up as well. You will find me near front and center wearing a pink jacket.
In my role as CEO of IBM, I regret to inform you that we are reducing our sponsorship by 50.8 percent. This is, not coincidentally, the percentage of women in the country’s population, according to the 2010 census.
Some members of the board and the executive team pushed very hard for a complete withdrawal of sponsorship now. Out of respect for our longstanding relationship with Augusta, I decided that was too drastic a measure to take all at once and with such short notice. But it is only fair to let you IBM will most likely not be a sponsor of next year’s tournament. I trust this gives you enough ... germaneconsulting.com/letter_ibm_ceo_augusta/ to read the rest)

Recently, I opined to several friends that Augusta National should invite both Ginny Rommety and World Golf HOFer Carol Semple to become members there. Given the club's longtime support of amateur golf (originated by the great Bobby Jones), it would make perfect sense.
Ms. Rometty became a captain of industry on her own merits, while Carol Semple (f.k.a. Carol Semple Thompson) has won seven USGA championships, played on 12 (!) U.S. Curtis Cup teams, and captained two other winning U.S. Curtis Cup teams. IMHO, no other woman has dominated amateur golf in the modern era quite like Carol Semple.
This is how I wish she responded......."No, I'm not a member of Augusta National. Frankly, I don't know what the big deal is. I am a woman and the CEO of IBM. That's prestigous in and of itself. Obviously, if I can attain a position of this stature with IBM, I can do anything despite my gender. Except become a member at Augusta. Get over it".
Is she a golfer? cause that is really the only question. If she doesn't play, there's no point in being a member. If she does, then it might be an issue.

She has already said that she is a scuba diver and unless they let her use one of their ponds she couldn't care less.
