Even Freddie questions Mickelson's benching
By Torleif Sorenson on 12/12/14
Count Fred Couples among those still questioning Tom Watson's benching of Phil Mickelson at the 2014 Ryder Cup:
"I'm not bashing Tom Watson, but sitting Mickelson, your best team player? Are you kidding me?"Couples was asked about the Ryder Cup after giving a clinic for kids on Thursday at a new 6-hole golf course in Maricopa, Arizona.
Last month, Couples has also described the special 11-member Ryder Cup Task Force as "a little much." Whether this affects his chances of becoming the captain of the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team is not yet determined, but Couples played in five Ryder Cups, winning twice in 1991 and 1993, and tying in 1989.
Couples captained the U.S. Presidents Cup team three times, winning each time in 2009, 2011, and 2013.

Phil is magic @ the Ryder Cup. A Ryder Cup wizard, if part of 34 matches, would go 11-17-6. A record like that would make Phil-of-$h#t "your best".
Full disclosure, I'm a long time Tom Watson fan. I do question his choices, more so sending Phil out Friday afternoon, because even though they fought to stay undefeated in the AM round, Phil/Keegan were not showing play that leant itself to foursome play (even more so than conditioning of a 36 hole day).
I think this bad decision led to the following day's decision discussed here. If four ball were the late round Saturday, I would've been a lot more skeptical of not playing the team at all Saturday.
I am more concerned about the disconnect between team and coach "behind the scenes" than the decisions made. I also believe, truthfully, the Europeans outplayed us and would've won this year regardless.
