"The Last Minute Bunker"
By mustang6560 on 4/24/12
The USGA decided (in what amounts to be a last minute decision) to double the number of fairway bunkers at the Olympic Club ahead of the 112th U.S. Open.

Mike Davis, the man behind course setup for the U.S. Open, wanted to add a fairway bunker to the 17th hole, which brings the total number of fairway bunkers to two, was to add one more risk-reward situation down the stretch.
“I think it’s going to be dramatic,” Olympic Club superintendent Pat Finlen said today. “Mike is trying to encourage players to go for the green (in two) or lay up quite a ways from the green.

“His thought is, someone could hit their second shot down there and have a relatively easy shot into the green. The whole idea is to put the risk-reward back into it.”
The more I follow golf, the more I appreciate a compelling finish. I want the course to be setup in such a way that a player can make up three to four strokes over the last few holes to win (or lose) a tournament. That is the drama of golf.

I think that'll be great. Not only will it be a decision to try to make up those strokes, but it will force them to play NOT to lose on that hole. Depending on the style of bunker they put in and how penal it will be to put your ball in there. Will you have to blast over a higher lip and have a long 3rd shot?? or will you be able to advance the ball a good ways and wedge into the green?

Upon further reading, i don't think i like the placement. Doesn't seem like it's going to come into play all that much. Looks as though it has a high enough face to make a tough 3rd shot but i'm not convinced. I'll be happy to eat my words come sunday at the US Open though.

So much for choosing a U.S. Open venue on its existing merits...

Lets see if I have this right. They lengthened the 16th hole to 670 yards to make it the longest par 5 in u.s open history and now they are adding a bunker to make 17 a reachable par 5. Am I missing something or does that make 2 par 5s in a row. Somebody please enlighten this poor soul. I'm confused.
