The Players Championship Is Not A Major By mustang6560 on 5/9/12
The Players Championship is not a major championship, however, the PGA Tour's signature event does have the feel of a major championship for a few reasons, namely:

Tip Your Editor [ comments ] "Even though the Players is not a major (which is a technicality I'm sure the PGA Tour hopes to change)" Why should this change? The 4 majors are special because they each bring something unique to the calendar. If we were to add more majors, this would completely tarnish anyones Major's they have already earned. The Players is what is is because it's the PGA Tours signature event, just like the European Tours at Wentworth. The Calendar already has enough events in the US, with the interest to move golf global why can't other countries have 'Signature events'. 5/9/12
Way too much talk about golf's "majors" these days. I blame Tiger. I mean, I understand for him, at his level, that its a great benchmark to try and beat. But for the other 99.9% who are not exactly aspiring to join the all-time greats of the game, it is a highly over-rated and over-discussed distinction. Another case of the media dumbing things down to bite-sized, pre-chewed, easily-digested portions. During the year there are many other tournaments that are four-round stroke play and feature the world's best, just like those four oh-so-special ones. Why again am I supposed to get a boner for the PGA championship, and why should this boner be bigger and harder than the one I get for the Players Championship, or the WGC matchplay? Because the media says so? No way. What I get a boner over is for me and only me to decide. 5/9/12
As long as that boner isn't for the Waste Management Phoenix Open....because that would be....weird. 5/9/12
I love watching The Players but, I agree with Beef on this one. Couldn't have said it better myself. 5/9/12
It's not a major, and should never be IMO. It's a tough Tourney for sure, but it's "The Players." 5/9/12
I think the Majors get so much attention is because theoretically you have all the best players, therefore the best competition. Tracking major champions is supposed to be the way to determine the "best of the best" and I guess a way to compare the players of old with the players of today. I don't necessarily agree with that, but I also don't have a much better idea, equipment and training is so drastically different. But if you add a fifth major it not only cheapens the other ones, but it throws the record books out the window. Who cares if someone gets more than Nicklaus if they get 25% more chances to do it? Leave it alone so people who care about the Majors don't have it cheapened, and people like me and beef can just go back to being surly. 5/9/12
@BAKE_DAWG: LOL that was funny couldnt have said it better then Beef's Boner analogy. nice. that being said i agree with the beef. for me its all about the competition some tourneys suck and i cant get a boner while others are like i took some viagra and am hard for 4 days..... ya i dont know about this analogy. 5/9/12
i love TPC Sawgrass, and not just for the closing stretch. would love to play there some day. also, leave it to a guy called 'legitimate beef' to come up with the boner analogy 5/9/12
you have to remember though, what we call majors now weren't majors when Bobby Jones was playing. it could change some day, but I think it will always be 4. any more then that would cheapen the others as someone said earlier. 5/9/12
If they ever make the Players a major, the Match Play Championship should be too. I don't think either should be. 5/10/12
Yes, there are many tournaments throughout the year agreed. As for Major's, there 4, people try and get their game ready for them. So effectively you've got the whole Professional Golfing Fraternity trying to peak at the same time. That's why they are the spectical that they are. If you win a Major, you're winning a tournament with the field effectively at it's best. 5/10/12
