The Olde Course is the crown jewel amongst the Philadelphia Public Golf Courses as it has been Nationally Ranked the #6 Best Municipal Course in The United States by Golfweek Magazine. Designed by renowned course architect, Hugh Wilson (architect of the famed Merion-East course in nearby Ardmore, PA) it is a mature tree-lined golf course that was established in 1916.

Built in the late 1920's, The Karakung Course was designed to recreate the character and charm of it's sister course, The Olde Course, yet meet the challenge of the everyday golfer. Although length may not be a factor, accuracy and proper club selection is paramount as most of the greens are small, and the elevation changes are ever present. Rumor has it that in the 1930's and 40's those golfers that were deemed as "not good enough to play The Olde Course" by the starter were sent to play Karakung. Overall, The Karakung Course is a fun and enjoyable golf layout and is a popular favorite as the unique variations in the terrain beckons golfers to develop a well-balanced golf game.

This could really be a special course. That is probably the best thing that I can say about it. The layout is great and the holes are very interesting. The upkeep was horrible. We stood on a tee box for 10 minutes trying to figure out what was going on before someone told us that there was a temporary green on the hole. There were two holes where they had beat up range mats instead of tee boxes because there was not a blade of grass to be found on them. To top it all off, you will find neighborhood kids playing on the course without a ranger in sight. On one hole, the kids were actually sitting on the tee box heckling players and asking if they can hit a few shots. The only time we did see a ranger, he had the gaul to ask us to pick up our pace when there was a group only one hole ahead of us. The only reason we were that far behind is because of the break we took at the aforementioned temporary hole, and the 10-20 minutes it took us to shoo kids off of the fairways. I would not suggest playing this course until they make more of an effort to keep non-golfers off of the course and if they drastically reduce the number of bare spots on the course.
