Newton Commonwealth Golf Course is a beautiful, exceptionally groomed, 18 hole public course located just minutes from downtown Boston. 1997 marked the centennial anniversary of the club, which was redesigned in 1920 by the renowned architect, Donald Ross. It offers a short, but challenging round of golf featuring quick greens and relatively narrow fairways. Course management is essential, as many a big hitter has discovered, with water and sand bunkers appearing frequently.

I really liked this course. It was very hilly, and sort of quirky, but it was in great condition and it was a lot of fun.

Strange golf course that was severely sized down many years ago and is now squashed for space. You almost wonder if they should have just made a good nine hole course. The first is a driveable par 4 (plays to about 250). The second is an odd par five with a creek that sinks any good drives giving you a shot in two. Hit three irons. The fourth hole tee is dead and you hit off a mat. The fifth hole should be split into two par 3s or something as you must hit a wicked slice on this 450 yard "par five" or you find yourself in another fairway. Another hole that should be converted into a par three is the thirteenth. You must hit an iron off the tee at the threat of losing your round if you try and go for the green on this "par four" that plays about 230 yards. You lob your 5 iron then find yourself with a severely slopped downhill wedge to a green nestled between the parking lot, clubhouse and a few other holes. The only decent holes are the last two which are essentially "normal" par 4s. This is a place to bring your kid / spouse that you're teaching.

This course has a great student discount, only $22 for 18. You can't beat that. Yeah, it's a really short hilly course, with weird holes, but it is always in good condition. The holes offer plenty of challenges. It's a great place to work on your game at a low price.
