Rawls Course at Texas Tech University

Architect Tom Doak is well-known as a "traditionalist" who is normally averse to bulldozing lots of land in building golf courses. But here, in a completely flat cotton field on the northern edge of the Texas Tech University campus, Doak and his design firm moved more than one million cubic yards of soil to sculpt a rolling landscape. Architect Tom Doak is well-known as a "traditionalist" who is normally averse to bulldozing lots of land in building golf courses. But here, in a completely flat cotton field on the northern edge of the Texas Tech University campus, Doak and his design firm moved more than one million cubic yards of soil to sculpt a rolling landscape. The course web site quotes Doak as saying, "the Red Raider course is probably the most complicated we've done to date."

The course is named for donor Jerry Rawls, a 1967 alumnus of Texas Tech. After he completed his B.S. in mechanical engineering, he earned an MBA at Purdue University, where Rawls began playing golf on the two courses there. As a gift to Texas Tech, Rawls helped spearhead the development of this on-campus course, which now hosts the Texas Tech University men's and women's golf teams, as well as the university's turfgrass science program.

Walking rates are $54 Monday through Thursday and $64 Friday through Sunday. A number of specials and discounts for faculty, staff, and students are available from the course web site.
