Considered the toughest challenge on the British Open "Rota," Carnoustie is a stern test for any golfer. This seaside links shows the hand of Old Tom Morris from the 1860's but golf on this land most likely dates back to the 1490's (earlier than St. Andrews). Recent history includes Jean Van de Velde's embarrassing triple bogey that found him ankle-deep in a burn as the world watched dumbfounded in the 1999 Open, and Harrington's near meltdown on the same hole before capturing the claret jug in a playoff in 2007. Other past champions Cotton, Armour, Hogan, Player, Watson and Lawrie are all enshrined in clubhouse paintings and mementos.
