The New Course on the property of the Grand Cypress Resort is my GÇ£NewGÇ¥ favorite course. I loved my first experience there so much, I am literally having trouble bringing myself to think of playing golf anywhere else, including the course where I am a member. What a first impression! Jack Nicklaus and his team masterfully designed this utterly fun, very Scottish style course. Every detail exudes the feel of a seaside course, even though this property is surrounded by towering pines, a few homes and a nature conservatory on the perimeter. The topography, vegetation, tee boxes and bunker details are spot on GÇô including wooden steps down into the deeper bunkers. If it weren't for those perimeter trees and homes and the 90 degree temperatures, I would have sworn I was teeing off at the Old course. Why was I so instantly captivated by this course? In my opinion, little else compares to a truly fun round of golf GÇô especially in true links style GÇô played on ultra-wide fairways and big greens. Golf is supposed to be fun right? Playing from the fairway has major appeal, especially to a mid-handicapper like myself. I loved being able to tee off as if the world were my fairway. While you'll likely find a pot bunker or two during your round, there are only a few which guarantee your quest for the green will cost at least one or two additional strokes. My favorite holes were one and 18, as both are beautiful replicas of St. Andrew's opening and closing holes. From the 1st tee, look toward the green and you'll spot the burn guarding it closely. Look to your left and you'll notice a stunning replica of the Valley of Sin fronting the 18th green. Other details are more subtle, such as the shell infused terra firma surrounding the first green, just past a wonderful cobblestone replica of the Swilcan Burn bridge. Considering all the effort that must have went into shaping this land, I want to wholeheartedly thank Jack himself for building this masterpiece only 25 minutes from downtown Orlando. It is great fun to play this course "inspired" by the OLD COURSE at St Andrews. But to call any of the holes "replicas" is dead wrong. If you ever played the real thing,( and I have about 14 times,) then this course is still great fun, but a replica it is not.. It stands as a good knockoff of Scottish golf, but nothing resembles the real thing like going there and doing it right. Best course I have ever played. Fun!!! I loved playing this course because it is pretty wide open yet you have watch where you are playing and concentration is a must. When I played the course was almost empty with no waiting and no one pushing in back. Most fun I ever had on any course bar none. You owe it to yourself to play this links style course at least once. It will be the standard you judge other courses by. New Course is a Links Style course that is pretty forgiving. Just pay attention to the fly overs on the GPS so you can see where all the pot bunkers are! The North/South/East courses have a lot of trouble and the South/East courses (especially) have some very tough greens. The East course features an island green par 3, so if you feel like having a TPC experience, be sure to hit up that set of 9. |
