Among Mr. Duane’s notable course designs are Braeburn GC in New York, Myrtle Beach National in South Carolina, Engineers GC in New York, the Bay Course at Kapalua Resort in Hawaii, and the Links Course at Half Moon Bay in California. Mr. Duane constructed a rolling, tree lined golf course that is picturesque and challenging. The course is playable for all, with five sets of tees, ranging from 5,400 yards from the forward tees to 6875 yards from the championship tees. The greens are large and receptive with considerable undulation.
The golf course is recognized as a high quality course, built for serious competition. Montammy has been the host of the New Jersey PGA and numerous US Open qualifier tournaments. The Club is the venue for its next US Open qualifier in 2010. In 2009, the Club is host of a qualifier for the Met, one of the New York Metropolitan area’s major golf tournaments.
The course’s challenges come not from its length, however, but from its strong mix of distinctive holes. The par 3s are relatively long, with undulating greens, strategic placement of hazards, and, on two of the par 3s, severe height differences from tee to green. The par 4s offer variety in both shape and length. Water is in play on 4 of the par 4s. The par 5 holes are a mix of dog legs and straight holes that offer the best chance to post a low score. The course is a stern but fair test of golf for golfers of all levels of skill.
Playing conditions are maintained at “tournament” level with firm, fast greens, tightly mowed fairways, and lush rough. Fairway areas have been enlarged as trees have been removed in the renovation program. No shortcuts are taken in maintaining the golf course, the Club’s number 1 asset.
