I think there may be a bug in the calculation of net score. Shouldn't the net score be calculated of the actual score? It appears to be calculating off the ESC score.
Two rounds at Meadowbrook GC.
On 5/14, hole 5: score 7, esc 7, net 6
On 5/19, hole 5: score 8, esc 7, net 6

Thanks,

I always thought the net score was calculated off the ESC, since that is the maximum score allowed for your handicap. I could be wrong, though.

When you golf tournements, it is stroke score for hole - hole hdcp for a net.
Using my above example for 2 golfers with the same handicap, one double boogeys, and the other triple boogeys. They would end up tied for net score if hdcp came off of ESC.
Golfer 1 should have a net of 6, and an ESC of 6.
Golfer 2 should have a net of 7, and an ESC of 6.
Golfer 1 wins the hole.
ESC only comes into play for calculating your HDCP.

We will be making the change for net score not to include esc in next 2 weeks.

While at it, please consider not using ESC score in your Fair Score computation as well. Fair Score shouldn't use ESC (which is meant for handicap purposes only). Otherwise, Fair Score is effectively grading something other than what happened that day, more like something that would have happened, had someone not blown up a hole or more...

Thanks.

yes, fair score should not include any hole adjustments. we hope to make that change as well. the other big change is multiple handicapping systems (not just usga).

In a recent forum thread I see that the "Fair Score" formula was changed to use the non-adjusted gross score (non ESC). I recently checked the 'Fair Score' value for one of my rounds and I think I've found another difference between what is documented and what is actually used. The documentation indicates that a non-adjusted differential is calculated first and then the players index is subtracted from that.

It looks like the formula actually used is:

((( non-adjusted gross score - course rating ) - index ) * 113 / course slope )

I'm not sure if this was intended or maybe an order of operations problem in the program.

Can you point us at that specific score?

I checked the formula and it seems to be calculating the differential first(non adjusted) and then later subtracting the index. So it would be:
(((GrossScore - CourseRating) X 113) / Slope) - Index

Sure. I'll use my round on 8/14 to illustrate. My gross score was 88 and my index was 17.6. The course rating is 66.6 and the slope 117. Using the expected fair score formula one would get (((88 - 66.6) *113/117) - 17.6 ) = 3.068. When I look at the leaderboard for my group (Bushwood Caddies) which is based on fair score, the fair score is listed as 3.7. I'm speculating that the formula used there is ( 88 - 66.6 - 17.6) * 113/117 = 3.67.

Thanks for all that data. We have identified the problem and fixed it. Was actually in the group leaderboard code that was not using your full handicap (only 17 vs 17.6). This should now be fixed.

I can't seem to get how you are figuring fair score. I'm using the formula you have in the help section:
(((GrossScore - CourseRating) X 113) / Slope) - Index
and none of my calculations are matching yours for fair score. Can you help?

As much as it might be advantageous to have a high handicap, I believe in honesty. I just don't believe I'm getting an accurate handicap from oobgolf. I play 9 holes quite regularly and am often close to par. However, my handicap says I'm 20.2??? Love the app though. Loads of fun. The stats are handy.
