I read an article a couple months ago from a writer/player in Scotland or Ireland talking about the creativity being eliminated from golf (at least to some degree) and he would like to see the club limit down to 8. If this were to occur (and obviously it's not going to) what 8 (or less) clubs would you settle on. The writer (whose name I can not remember) said his bag would consist of this: Driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 5i, 7i, 9i, SW, Putter. I would find it difficult to argue with those choices although I might be tempted to go with a 2w/stong 3w instead of driver and 3 wood and add another wedge.

If this were the case, I'd probably go with something like this:

Driver
4 hybrid
7-9 iron
SW
LW
Putter

I might swap the LW for a PW or GW.

Can we do 9 clubs?

I don't think I could do without any of the following:

Driver
3-iron
4-hybrid
putter.
2 irons...probably a 6 and an 8
3 wedges....45 degree, 52 degree, 58 degree

If I had to lose one of those clubs, there would definitely be something missing from my game.

Here's what I would carry:

3w
4 hybrid
6i
7i
9i
pw
sw
putter

I only carry 9 as it is, so I'd just drop the 6i and be left with:

Driver
3w
4/5hy
7,8,9
PW
Putter

gw
sw

Hells yea. I can hit every shot in the book with that. I think in this case, the driver would be a wasted club. I don't really get THAT much more distance with my driver than my 3 wood, i mean what's 20 or so yards when you have the versatility to hit from a tee OR the grass?

I like your choices. I would have to agree this would be the most versatile selection that would cover 99 percent of shots.

I'd have to go with:

Driver
3 Hybrid
5 iron
7 iron
8 iron
PW
SW
Putter

I'd probably change out the 8 for a 9, but I can't hit my current 9 iron (really bad lie angle).

Tbh, when I think about how far I can hit balls with these clubs there's not too many gaps, especially as I can just grip down slightly with a longer club.

I only have 10 clubs and that's all I've ever used. I carry them in a 5 inch diameter Sunday bag, so that they fit in the baggage compartment. The balls glove and tees go inside my shoes in the shoe bag. Gotta travel light.

Interesting one. I guess I'd bring along:

Driver
3W
24* hybrid
7i
9i
PW
SW
P

Those are the clubs I use most during a round. I'd miss my 21* hybrid, though. I'm getting good at hitting that thing, and it fills a gap between the 24* and the 3W.

Tastes change, and so do mine. After a good year, my club selection here would definitely be different.

I'd need my driver. It's the only club that I can hit over 250. Hell...it's the only club I can hit over 220.

And then I'd need a gap club between my driver and my irons. I'm torn betweem my 4h and my 5h.

I'd need two irons. Give me a 7i and a 9i.

Three wedges. I'd need a bit bigger gaps to fill in the holes, but I think 60*, 54*, and 48* would work just fine.

And then give me a putter.

220? I'd be happy to hit my driver for 150...
