What is it with the etiquette of smart clothing?

I played on Saturday and wore my work trousers. I looked good, until I got out on the course and started kicking mud up on them.

I looked a right state once we finally finished (about 5 hours later).

Not helped by slipping up on the mud - after hitting my drive all of about 50'. Truly injury to insult.

Come on, when it's been rainy and the course isn't known for good drainage...there's nothing wrong with jeans!

Is there?

I am a Florida boy, I always wear shorts. It may be 45 degrees and windy, I am wearing shorts. Will wear long sleeve windshirts, but will be in shorts. Twisted Evil

This Saturday, I will be in shorts, even though low will be 35 the night before, and the high in the low 60s.

I guess I'm old school, but personally, I believe there is no place for jeans on a golf course unless you are a groundskeeper. Same with t-shirts. I think by not allowing jeans or t-shirts, it helps to maintain an aura of class to the game. It's one of the things I like about the atmosphere surrounding golf.

Having worked as a caddy at 14, a groundskeeper at 19 and a player on and off for 40 years, my appreciation for the game as it has been played for hundreds of years, prohibits me from accepting anything less. JMHO.

OK, my more serious response to my own thread...

I too like golfers to look smart, although I don't actually mind players in jeans (I get MUCH more upset by slow play, or by players behind me hitting their tee shots before we're actually out of range).

I guess my, fairly minor league, point was that dressing smart for the conditions I was playing in (a partially rainy day + on a course with poor drainage + after a few days of rain = mud!) was absurd. I had mud marks and splashes on my trousers after just a couple of shots - and that's NEVER a good look. So, under those circumstances I don't think it unreasonable, at least for public courses like the one I was playing on, to relax their dress code. Not all of us have, or can afford, wet weather gear.

Heck I only started playing this year (just 15 rounds so far, only two of which were 18 holes).

Just to confirm: Yeah, I'm hooked!

I was not joking about the shorts, but the clothes I wear for golf I buy for the express purpose of playing golf, so I do expect them to get dirty/muddy from time to time. And really, I would think jeans getting wet would be too heavy and uncomfortable to play in.
