Hello all!

Would you consider it a breach of etiquette if one of your playing partners says "Hey this is for birdie" while you are prepping for the putt? Personally, I think this is kind of a jinx!

Well, if the comment was intended as "gamesmanship" in order to rattle you, then yes, it would be a breach of etiquette. However, it seems more like it was just a comment on the situation.

Still I hear what you are saying. I don't particularly like it when fellow players say "great putt" or "it's in" prior to my ball arriving at the hole. There are days it seems those comments are invariably followed by a lip-out or some other tragic miss. The rational part of me knows a premature comment has no effect on the shot. However, when things are not going right it is hard to maintain my rationality.

This is a tough one. I suppose it depends on who you are playing with. If it's a bunch of buddies who always joke around and all tease each other anyway, then no, it's not a breach of etiquette. On the other hand, if it's in a serious match, with people you don't really know, or competitors who are trying to psyche you out, then yes, it's poor etiquette. Certainly gamesmanship is part of the game. And it should be. But, using subtlety is a more accepted and classy way to do it, not blatant obviousness.

Just make the putt. That's how you deal with gamesmanship - which is definitely part of the game. I think you're being overly sensitive. Don't let em see you sweat.

When they HORRIBLY miss a putt by several feet through some unusual malfunction. Ya gotta say "HOW did that NOT go in?"

I think putting is the only thing in golf that actually hurts both people. I mean, it does with me anyway. I can't stand to watch someone roll putts so good all day and keep lipping out or missing by a hair. Even if i'm playing against them, it just stinks to hit something that nice and not have it go in.
