yesterday i was playing golf as a single. at the 3rd hole i caught up to a group of FIVE who on that 3rd tee the 1st guy hit 1 ball, the 2nd guy one, the 3rd and 4th guy hit about 5 balls and the 5th guy hit 2, then they would spend about 15 minutes looking for balls that obviously went in the water and deep into the woods, some of them that weren`t even theirs. Our course has in-cart GPS thingies that tells you where everyone is on the course. I checked the course map and there wasn`t a group to be seen until hole 10. They didn`t even recognize me or let me play through when i would have been past them in a flash. They would hit extra balls, look for balls for about 15 minutes, look for just any lost balls, talk on their cell phone and chat when they should have been playing the game, didn`t play ready golf, fool around on the green, not leaving the green immeadiately after they all puted out, and MUCH MORE, not offering to let me play through ONCE. It took nearly 4 hours just to complete nine holes! at the turn, i went into the pro shop to complain, and those morons, who had just wasted even more time stopping at the turn for a bunch of beer, finally had to leave the course. after playing the next 7 holes in just 40 minutes, i ran into a 4 some at the par 4 17th. i was in the 17th fairway waiting for them to get off the green when a 3 some who also had been delayed by that 5 some got on the 17th tee and saw me doing nothing in the fairway. one of them shouted, HURRY UP YOU MOTHERF*CKER! at me. i shouted back, I`M WAITING FOR A 4 SOME ON THE GREEN!
they then began to tee of while i was still in the fairway, nearly hitting me in the head. i was FURIOUS.

If the group in front of you went to go get beer at the turn, that was your chance!
Seriously, though, if I have to wait for a group that has no one playing in front of them for more than a couple of holes, I'll politely ask if they'll let me play through.

good idea about jumping ahead of them when they bought beer at the turn, but the course i played at does not allow you to do that. i decided to just complain in the pro shop and have them removed from the course because they completed only 9 holes in about the time a group should play 18. as for the 17th hole incident, they might not have known there was a 4 some ahead of me because the hole doglegged 90 degrees to the right behind some thick trees, but them yelling at me like that and them teeing off pissed me off.

You're right. That was completely uncalled for. Even if you were playing slow, there are better ways to handle it than yelling down the fairway and hitting into someone.
I've been hit by a golf ball twice in my life. Both times, it was on the leg. Both times, it hurt like hell. Getting hit in the head could kill you. But sometimes, you just have to accept the fact that they were probably not the brightest people in the world. I mean, what would you think if your group came up on a single on the last hole just standing there in the middle of the fairway? Would you think he was just standing there because he was bored? I know you're smarter than that. If he's standing in the middle of the fairway, he's waiting for someone.
And here's the deal about playing through at the turn. If you get to the tenth tee box and there is no one there, go ahead and hit. Most clubs I've played at will say that if you snooze you lose your place. If the ranger comes and questions you, all you have to say is you thought they left. Or if one of them is rudely sitting on the tenth tee "holding their place" you can politely ask him to let you play through. If he declines, then it's time to go talk to the ranger/clubhouse.

you gotta find some better places to play, Player. The people where you play are really not nice.

Holy crap... I thought i had it bad when I had a couple of old guys in front of us.
They let someone else play through, and I guess they couldn't go much faster, so we were stuck.
25 practice swings, before getting another club is rediculous.
I know its not good Etiquette, but we just jumped 2 holes, and played out the 18 and I went back to the holes I missed. It was twilight, getting dark, and I didn't think I'd get close to finishing.
I only jumped because there was a 4-5 hole gap.
Although someone in a fully stacked day jumped our group like that one time, when we were waiting as much as possible, and they just drove off while we were on the green and teed up (they couldn't hit because the group we were following had just teed off too).
They made me mad, because they weren't gaining much, except pushing everyone else waiting back. They have no right. but if there is room, and it doesn't affect anyone, I have jumped a couple of holes now and then... but only at twilight time, and if there is a big hole in the groupings.
I'm bad, I know

gpickin - i've jumped before too. Usually at twilight when the course isn't really jammed. It's not a horrible thing to do at that point in time where there's a big gap in people. the ones who skip on crowded days and then make ME wait because they stuffed themselves into a gap that wasn't even there are the bad ones. I normally report them right away and that usually does the trick and gets me back on track next hole. It's a shame though because i don't like doing that. Nobody wants to be the guy who calls the clubhouse and reports someone for slow play, excessively damaging the course, or any other reason because you look like a snob, but it's got to be done. Those people are not only ruining it for you, but everyone behind you as well. We have a responsibility to be civil to those in front of as well as behind us on the course and that will make it more enjoyable for everyone.

I have a hard time believing that scenario. And an even harder time believing someone would continue to play golf behind a group who would do that.

I'm in partial agreement.
I've seen kids treated pretty horribly on the golf course, and that sucks. But when it comes to adults, people who act like that on a regular basis tend to end up in a lot of fights. And I've only actually seen one fight on the golf course. One of the guys ended up in the hospital with a sand iron imprinted on his skull. He's okay now, but I can totally see why someone might want to imprint a sand iron on his skull.

This is one of the times you need a cell phone on the course. Almost every course has their numbe ron the scorecard. Get your cell phone, call the course and have them send out a ranger. I've done it before.

You see player, they told you to SHUT UP. You told me to SHUT UP. That's the thing you like to say. I think you made up that story. It has the same language. Like the other posters said, I'd have done something about them, instead of going on playing along behind them like a whipped puppy. Keep the stories coming though, they're funny...thanks
