What's "the basic chip shot"? Phil describes pretty much every possible shot he takes from within 50 yards.
Also...my understanding has always been that a chip shot denotes a specific type of swing. When I use the hinge-and-hold that Phil describes in the video, I call that a chip shot. When I release my wrists but don't take a full swing, I call that a pitch shot.

I read a Golf Digest a few months ago and I believe it was David Ledbetter who described it like this.
Chip Shot: is no wrist action, club head does not go higher than your knees on backswing and forward swing. Body rotates slightly through the shot and ball should come out low.
Pitch: is a little wrist bend on backswing, club head goes about waist high on forward and backswing, and wrist bend again on forward swing. Ball should come out a little higher than chip.
Flop: Alot of wrist bend, club head goes past waist to shoulders, open club face, ball goes really high.
I think it depends on techique used and what height you want the ball to go to determine what kind of shot it is.

as far as I can tell a chip shot and pitch is defined only by carry vs roll. Chip shots roll more than carry and Pitch shot carry more than roll. Basic chip that I am thinking of is what the above post mentions from golf digest. Phil never seems to talk about these type of shots, everything is hinge and hold with him.

But if you notice, Phil is able to accomplish a shot that stops on a dime with his chip shots. He describes the shot very eloquently in his video. You put the ball towards the front of your stance, you open your stance, and you open your club face. The shot doesn't work on fluffed up lies in the rough, but is very effective just about everywhere else. This might be what you describe as a pitch shot, but to both Phil and me, it is a chip shot because it uses the exact same fundamentals as the shots you put in the back of your stance that you get a lot of roll out of.
The chip shot that I sink most frequently is exactly like that. They are the short ones that have very little green to work with. I don't want more than a few feet of roll out of this shot, but it's still a chip shot to me because it uses the exact same fundamentals as a shot that I want to roll all the way across the green.

Bryan-How high does this shot go? It sounds almost like a flop shot to me (open stance, open clubface) no roll. I don't think there is an exact definition to each shot. All I know is that in TW golf game on PS3, a chip is low and rolls alot, pitch is in middle and flop is high with no roll. I base it off of that because TW would not be wrong (sarcastic).

The shot I'm talking about goes maybe two feet high and travels maybe 5-10 yards total, over half of which is in the air. It's shown on Mikkelson's video, and I practice it all the time because it is an extremely handy shot to have. It is not a flop shot, though, because it doesn't use the bounce of the club to project the ball into the air, and I don't like to call it a pitch shot because it uses such a short, compact swing.
They have the shot on Tiger 10, too. Just hit a partial chip shot with a 60 degree wedge, and you'll see what I"m talking about.

Sounds like what I like to call the "Hop N' Stop" It basically takes 1 bounce, lands and stops.

I have been studying Phil's DVDs. Excellent work and very methodical.
Lately been practicing the flop in my backyard (about 120'x40' area heavily landscaped).
Every day back and forth across our little grassy bit 10-15 feet and then 30 footers over the 15 foot tall arbor into a small landing area under a couple of Pear trees. Maybe a hundred times or so.
Used it extensively in my last round as I rarely hit GIR but must deal with tight pins from where I usually land.
