I play at a local course that was flooded a month ago, and many of the fairways were lost which led them to turning two par 4's into par 3's. In the last few days they also lost an entire green, so there has since been a third temporary par 3 added.

Usually I score these by taking my score plus one stroke to accomidate for the par 4, but I feel a little uneasy about adding that to my scores and my handicap. Am I doing the right thing by adding the stroke?

Good question. Here is what the USGA Handicap Manual states:

a. Temporary Changes
When temporary tees and/or greens are used, the Handicap Committee must notify the authorized golf association. The authorized golf association will decide whether or not scores made under those conditions are to be accepted for handicap purposes, and whether the USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating should be modified temporarily. The Handicap Committee has a responsibility to notify its members that when a hole is not played due to construction, the score for that hole must be par plus any handicap strokes to which the player is entitled. (See Section 4-2.) The procedure for issuing a temporary rating may be found in "The USGA Course Rating System."

95% of the time this is going to leave you and me in a pickle. Most public courses will not go through the effort to notify the state golf association and get a temporary rating. Unless the course provides a temporary rating, my suggestion is to record par plus any handicap strokes as your "official" score for handicap reporting regardless of how you actually play the hole.

So in this instance, if the original hole is a par-4, record a "4" plus any handicap strokes. You may actually have shot a "2" on the now par-3 hole but report 4+ until the hole is restored to a par 4.

Yeah I doubt that course notified the USGA about the changes. Thanks for the info!

We usually count our T shot as our 2nd on a chopped down par 4.... As our 3rd on a chopped down par 5.

And if its a temp green (usually rougher than Hell) we count a max 2 putt. Basically if you get close and chip, its an auto bogey...

They had a sign that said two putt rule on the temporary green, but if the ball is close enough it's basically a 1 putt no matter what.

For your score, if you're competing, by all means...do what the course says.

But if you are handicapping your round, you're playing the round as if those holes don't even exist. Consider them practice.
