So, to my great surprise and delight I just got $1000 in gift cards to Golf Galaxy. Basically all my equipment with the exception of a new putter I just got last year needs to be replaced. It's all either really old or cheap e-bay specials. I realized I could spend all of it and only have a new driver/ woods, but I need to stretch it as much as I can. I am not exactly a scratch golfer and don't really care if my bag is full of the new hotness. My last irons were 1/2 inch longer than standard so I am most likely going to have to do the same this time(6 feet 2 inches).

Advice?

You might consider getting fitted for a driver and/or irons prior to purchasing clubs. Then, to stretch your dollars, look at last year's models and hot sellers as they typically will be deeply discounted. I wish I had your problem ... how to spend $1,000 on golf equipment for myself. Wink

I highly recommend a set of Adams Tight Lies irons to start with. You can probably get by on last year's model for $200 to $300, and they are great clubs. I gave my old set of Tight Lies to my nephew, and I hit them at the range with him over Thanksgiving. I still hit them very well, and they have several hundred rounds in them.

And also, don't think you have to spend it all at once, either. In fact, I would highly recommend upgrading whatevery you need the most right now. Put in a few rounds to get used to that new club(s) before moving on to the next item that needs to be upgraded. Every piece of equipment I have ever purchased has had at least a slight learning curve, and hitting the course with all new equipment could be quite frustrating.

They have good deals on used stuff. They can fit it for you too, for $50 bucks, I think. You could get completely set up with top of the line irons and woods for well under $500. Buy your wedges new, though. As far as putters, buy whatever works, regardless of price.

I am going to Golf Galaxy tomorrow to have an iron fitting done and hopefully make a purchase. My mission for tomorrow is pretty much just irons, but we'll see what happens.

I will look into gently used irons if they fit me and are a deal.

I am not in a hurry to buy everything at once. I want to take my time and enjoy the experience and make sure I get the right stuff.

Smart man. Have fun and report back on how things went and whether you purchased anything.

So I went in and tried out several different iron sets and finally decided on the Taylor Made Burner 1.0's pw-5i with a 4 and 3 hybrid. Also, they are adding an inch to them because of my height. They felt pretty good when I was hitting them in the simulator. I look forward to trying them again with the extra inch on em

I went there really just looking for new irons but the had the Taylor Made Superfast 1 driver and 3 wood. I hit em in the simulator and this is really where I saw the big difference between my old clubs and these. I was hitting the driver a consistent 250 yards in play.

Now I am just depressed that I have to wait months until I can play a round with em
