I have heard it said that one of the hardest results to achieve in golf is the albatross (or double eagle). Much harder than a hole-in-one based on the infrequency of the feat.

Somewhere up there in difficulty is the par after a stroke & distance penalty. Some will recall Fred Couples "3" on the 17th at Sawgrass when he dunked one and then holed out from the drop area. My father drowned a ball on a similar type hole, re-teed and holed out for a "3" about a decade ago.

What makes the result so surprising, especially for an amateur on a par 3, is that you have already proven you CAN'T hit the shot and then you have to do it again. Par 5's are most likely the most common hole to do it on (OB or Lost and then an "eagle") although short, drivable par 4's would be up there.

Personally, I have never come close but it crosses my mind now & then when I make a horrid tee shot at a par 3.

I've not made par after stroke AND distance. But made a birdie on a par 5 (Black Mesa, home of my first HIO Nate)after dribbling the drive short of the ladies tees, by hitting two of the best three woods ever, to about 8 inches.

closest I ever came was number 8 at lost creek golf course, dog leg left have to cross a creek on the second shot. topped my 3 wood into the creek, dropped another ball and hit it 240 right into the hole for a birdie. Nice huh.

I've never even bogeyed a hole after taking stroke and distance.

I made a bogey on a par 5 with two penalty strokes once. Drive is on a dogleg, hit my drive through the fairway into a hazard. Dropped, hit my third over the green into another hazard, got up and down from behind the green for bogey.

Yes I have but only once though. I was on this par 5 hole with bushes and trees to the left of the fairway, and to the left of the bushes and trees was a big lake marked with red stakes. I drove it way left off the tee and into the water. I went down to the area and saw that the only 2 places I could drop a ball was back on the tee or in the bushes. I could not drop on the other side of the lake because the other side of the lake was faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away. I decided to go back to the tee and hit my 3rd shot. I killed that 3rd shot, then hit my 5 wood 4th shot off the flagstick and close to the hole for a memorable par.
