Don't have either or any, my only experience with GPS systems is ones installed on carts at some courses or with boat navigation, where we were told that there is a small margin for error and to remember that so that you don't drive up on the rocks. At a course one time, my ball was right next to the 160 mark on the ground, both carts in our group were pulled up also very close to mark, my carts GPS said 164, the other was closer to 170, who do you believe?. If I spend the $$, probably go with a laser rangefinder and a $5 course yardage book (when available) My opinion only

I believe a laser rangefinder is MUCH better than GPS..... My friend Francesco Schettino says GPS is GOOD ENOUGH. "I use it on my boat all the time" He says.

Very true. I use both however. I base my decision for the day on the type of course i'm playing. If i'm on a track that has a lot of blind shots, i usually end up with the GPS. While the laser is really accurate, it's very much a line of sight product. If you can't see it, you can't shoot it. For those courses i like the GPS. That being said. i haven't needed anything besides the oobgolf app for my phone -- then again i haven't played any tournament rounds on those types of courses. Most tourneys don't allow the smartphones on the course for play.

I know I told merlin some time back that I felt the GPS on my boat was GOOD ENOUGH. But now I'm beginning to have second thoughts. Maybe that 3 yards or so could have made a difference... Capt. Francesco

Captain, this is part of the reason I love this forum Smile

Chris, I use my smartphone too, I think if I play more, I know I'll a non smartphone gps in the future, because I want to play more tournaments, and I dont want to risk not having gps, or having it and getting disqual'ed for a smartphone rule... of course, i'd play without if i knew their ruling.

I think LASER is nice, but I'd probably want both just in case.

Gents,
I never saw a reply from Mustang agreeing that OOB uses the Skycaddie mappings.

Does anyone know for sure?

Obviously, I am a little biased, but SkyCaddie is hands down the best GPS on the market. It's the only company that physically visits each and every course and uses survey grade equipment to map them. The other GPS companies, including Golf Buddy, use third party satellite imagery to create their maps.

Nate,

Considering Oob uses the same mapping as SkyCaddie, that makes them both the best, yes?

Yes, since SkyGolf is our parent company, it supplies the GPS maps we use for the oobgolf app, so we do use the best course maps in the industry.

Thanks Mustang. I've got the SGX and an SG5, but this is good to know. I can pass this along to others that only want to carry their cellphones.
