Here is the description from the OOBgolf available stats section:

Sand Save: To get up-and-down (in the hole in 2 or less strokes) from a greenside bunker.

Though it doesn't specify it, I always thought it was "to save par".

The term "save" in golf means to go up and down. Try to think of it this way. The expectation for every green is a two-putt. We know that because pars are based off of the ability to reach a green and then two-putt. So if a person misses his green in regulation, but then putts once to hole out, he has saved par by doing so.

i guess since the official? definition does not specify a score for a 'Sand Save', is simply means that you 'saved' yourself any more than 2 strokes to get in the hole after you landed in the greenside bunker.

i also tried scouring the web for an "official" definition of 'up and down' and it's the same thing..... some people think that 'up and down' means taking no more than 2 strokes from just off the green following your approach shot, irregardless of score. many assume that an it's only 'valid' if it's for par or better. (note that the PGA Tour's 'Scrambling' stat requires par or better)

considering how the USGA's Official Rules of Golf is 215 pages long, it's a bit odd that there are no 'official' definitions for some of these commonly used terms, so far as I can determine.

My view: You can "save" par, bogey, double, triple, etc. by 1-putting instead of two-putting. It has nothing to do with how poorly you played the hole up until that point. If you get up and down in your last two shots, starting from off the green, that was a save. If the "up" came from the sand and either it went "down" in the same shot, or the next shot goes down, it's a sand save. I have had thousands of up and downs for bogey, and unfortunately many for double and triple as well. Basically, any time you 1-putt, you "saved" a stroke because 2-strokes on a green is the standard expectation for every green, everywhere, for everyone.
