I know anything that reads slope of the green is illegal, is the range finder with Slope ok, or slope on fairways etc etc considered illegal too?

This is the product i'm looking at:
Bushnell Tour V2 Golf Laser Rangefinder with Pinseeker, Slope Edition Patriot Pack (Silver)

http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Rangefinder-Pinseeker-Edition-Patriot/dp/B004PJCTEM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1340385292&sr=8-3&keywords=bushnell+v2+tour+patriot

Yes is is illegal... it provides you a "calculated distance" to the pin taking into account the elevation up or down to the pin.

According to Appendix IV of the USGA rules, this would be against the rules whether we are talking about the slope of the green or the slop of the fairway. Distance measuring devices must only be able to measure the distance.

Thought so... I did some more reading too.

I guess from what i read, a RangeFinder is illegal with or without "Slope" but most clubs and tournaments have a local rule for the Rangefinder with no slope.

Normal laser is legal for handicap but illegal for tournament without the local rule.

Slope is illegal for handicap and tournaments... regardless.

The important part of the suggested Local Rule is that the equipment must not have the ability to provide more than distance. The USGA suggested Local Rule reads in part:

"If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, windspeed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.”

Of course, a club might choose to use a variation on the suggested Local Rule and allow devices that could measure the slope as long as the player does not actually use that feature. Best to know what your device can do and whether the Local Rule permits its use.

Whilst there are clubs that carry such a rule, the use of a slope-measuring range finder officially would nstill ot be allowed since a local rule cannot waive a Rule of Golf, see 33-8a.

Well, dicks didn't have any of the ones I wanted in stock.

But I am going for the NO SLOPE.
If i got distance, I can FEEL the elevation.
Note, I live in a basin desert, we dont do much slope here... Smile

Thanks for the rulebook validation though.
This forum rocks.

Agree with you jev. In the USA, however, some clubs routinely stomp all over the Rules, either unintentionally or not.
