The important part of the suggested Local Rule is that the equipment must not have the
ability to provide more than distance. The USGA suggested Local Rule reads in part:
"If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, windspeed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification,
regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.”
Of course, a club might choose to use a variation on the suggested Local Rule and allow devices that could measure the slope as long as the player does not actually use that feature. Best to know what your device can do and whether the Local Rule permits its use.
