Apologies....thought we were allowed 14 clubs PLUS a putter.

I would get one of those chippers which are banned by the USGA. If you're gonna get a 15th club, get one that the golf gods won't recognize, that way you can't be penalized for carrying an extra club in your bag.

Not all chippers are banned by the USGA. I have one that would be legal, due to it having a "non-putter" grip and not being ambidexterous. I don't have much use for it anymore, since my short game has improved so much, but it's nice to have for those "yip" days.

I know that some chippers are permitted, my point was trying to inject humor by suggesting that the illegal 15th club could not be considered a club if the USGA did not approve of it, therefore technically he has only 14 clubs in his bag. Humor was never my strong point.

Having lived in a Yahoo chat room for more years than I care to admit to, I am aware of that fact. I am going to start using emoticons to relay the intent of a comment if it doesn't translate to text.

You have a point about 14+1 ...my cart bag is a 14 way divider with a putter well on the side. That's 15 slots suggesting 15 clubs

I actually do carry 15 clubs, but declare one out of play prior to teeing off at the first hole to avoid penalty. For me it is easier than leaving a club at home or in the car as sometimes the decision about which club to leave out is a last minute one depending on how I feel.

I started off leaving my lob wedge out as it was a new club and I was unskilled and not confident using it. Then I went through a phase of leaving out my driver in favor of a 3W on longer holes. At the moment, the 4i is usually 'left at home' since it's only been used once on my home course.

Besides....I've posted pretty negatively about chippers in the past. My belief is that using a chipper is a handicap. When I'm chipping, I use all of my irons/wedges at one point or another depending on the amount of green I have and the distance I have to go to get to the green. With a chipper, I get one trajectory....

But, now that I know I have the maximum number of clubs in my bag, there is no longer even any temptation to go get one.

Actually..I've been thinking about ditching the 3W and going with a 2H (17*).

I don't remember where I read it but someone, somewhere was talking hybrids compared to irons compared to woods. To summarise his point using 7W/3i/3H as an example. All three clubs are basically interchangeable but each have their own characteristics regarding shot trajectory. People who little to no divot should use the wood, while those who want a softer landing with more shot shaping should go with the iron. Hybrids would suit golfers between these 2 styles.

I have had great success with my 3H @ 21* loft. I think it maybe a psychological thing but I feel more comfortable with the hybrids over the long irons.

Try hitting a couple at the store and see how they work for you.
