I hit my tee shot just into edge of the woods. There was too much brush to swing a club so I declared the ball unplayable and added a penalty stroke. I intended to drop the ball two club lengths from the spot laterally towards the fairway. This however put me on the cart path adjacent to the woods. From there I took relief from the cart path with no additional penalty. Was this the correct play?

Without referring to the rules, I think it might be OK to do as you did. I might question whether your relief from the cart path was the nearest point of relief, though; I'm wondering if that point of relief would be nearer the trees than on the opposite side (which is where I assume you took relief)? The other place to check in the rules is whether your drop from the unplayable lie can be taken on/near a cart path.

Thanks for the reply Armand. Your assumption about the drop location is correct. The only thing separating the cart path from the woods/brush was a row of large stone (I assume for erosion prevention - the cart path was at a slightly lower elevation). In my opinion, anything short of moving to the other side of the cart path was unplayable. I'll see what I can find about taking unplayable drops near cart paths. Thanks again.
