I have a question about stat tracking and how to record certain shots. I know that GIR is automatically recorded on OOB using score and putts data. But I've had two situations arise recently that make me question how to record my putts.

A) I get on the green in one on a par 3. But there is rough between my ball and the hole, so I hit a chip shot over it near the hole. I miss the next putt, then tap in for 4. Did I 2-putt or 3-putt?

B) Same situation, on green in one on a par 3. I hit the putt towards the hole, but much too hard, so that the ball ends up on the fringe. I putt up close from there and tap in for 4. Again, 2-putt or 3-putt?

In both cases, I'd have to give myself 3 putts for the program to give me the GIR. But in situation A), I only used the putter twice, and in situation B), I hit a "putt" while not on the green. I'm fairly sure that A) is a 3-putt, but I'm not sure about B) at all.

Interesting situations. Kevin and I will have to look into ways to make this easier to define on oob. It would also be good if someone who maybe has "official golf knowledge" answers your questions.

In both cases you were clearly GIR. In my OPINION I think situation A) is a two putt GIR and B) is a 3 putt. Even if B wasn't "technically" a 3-putt it was your bad putting that put you in that situation so it's your bad putting (marking a 3-whack) that you want to record.

kenjab,

for recording purposes, the club that you used on the green is irrelevant. it's still a putt. for green maintenance purposes however, you are sometimes only allowed to use the putter.

i am 95% sure that you recorded it correctly. those are both 3-putts. i can see an argument for the first one being something else, but it probably comes up much too rarely to make any difference.

I think you would want them recorded as 3 putts. Especially your second case where your putting is what killed the hole, so you want to know that...

I have actually done the second one you asked about (more than once) and just recorded a 3 putt in order to register a GIR, but technically its not a putt unless (some part) of your ball is on the putting surface.

I agree though that its a pretty rare occasion to have an accomidation for it when you enter your stats.

i think i saw someone "3putt" on the 17th green at sawgrass this weekend while watching pgatour.com live@ coverage. the player landed on the green then proceeded to putt it wayy to hard off the green onto the fringe then putt it back onto the green using a putter i believe, and then tap in. the announcers had no problem terming it "another 3 putt". i forget which player that was but when billy kratzert said 3 putt i thought of this thread. kratzert is a 4 time pga tour winner, i think he would know.

what if you hit a real bad one onto the green of another hole? believe me it's happened..

briny baird was the one who 3-putted the 17th after almost sending his first putt into the water. i dont rememer what the announcer said about it, and i couldnt find anything specifically saying it was a 3-putt, but thats how i would rule it.

i don't think the 3 putt i was talking about happened on sunday. it must have been a different player b/c i didn't watch pgatour.com's live@ on the day baird 3 putted.

i guess a lot of people had putting misfortunes on 17 throughout the week. i could have watched a dedicated channel for the 17th hole for the week

To your question about hitting the wrong green..Since the correct green would be probably at least 100 yards away, you surely wouldn't hit a pitching wedge, or for that matter you couldn't hit anything that would risk damaging the surface. My guess is that you'd have to take a drop off the putting surface with a stroke penalty. Where's Mr rules guy?

No way thats a penalty unless its marked. I would call it a local rule that you shouldn't be hitting off of another green but it not illegal. I would drop off the green no close to the hole with no penalty.

my guess is that if it's a pga event they would let the pro hit a wedge from wrong green. at my home course, my guess is you take a free drop off the green no closer to the hole.

first time i ever saw john daly in person, i was chatting with a fellow fan on the 5th fairway at congressional country club in bethesda md when everyone yelled duck! a few moments later here comes daly. he crushed one left and long into the green side bunker of a different green (hole eight). from there he hit a towering bunker shot over evergreen trees and hit the correct green in regulation. quite impressive, and all done while drinking diet coke between swings. another 5 to 10 feet left and he would have been on the green of the wrong hole. kinda wished that would have happend now.
