I carry 14 clubs, but it all depends on the course you play. Local courses and less expensive courses are often limited with the space they have so you have all the par 4's between 300-320yds or driver/wedge.

I've made some new acquisitions, and pulled some stuff out... new bag config:
R5 Dual-D
Wilson Air Power 3wood
2h- TM Rescue Mid
5h- Dunlop Loco
7-9i- Wilson
48* (Eidolon), 52* TM Rac, 56* Purespin, 60* TM Z-TP
Odyssey Crimson Series putter
12 clubs.
Still adding, and adjusting. Looking for a new set of irons, and to replace the 3wood.

Nike Sumo 9.5
Nike Sasquatch 3W
Callaway 3h X Series
Ping i15 3i-PW (8 clubs)
Cleveland CG12 56 and 60
Odyssey 3-ball Putter
I am considering dropping the hybrid and adding a 64 degree, since I am rarely out of range with my 3i, but my chipping and putting recently have been abysmal.

ATX: have you considered a gap wedge. It looks like the Ping i15 PW is 46 degrees and your next lofted club is your 56* wedge. That's 10 degrees of a gap... do you notice a gap in your distances at all?

Single: That is part of what I am trying to figure out. My full swing pitching wedge is 135-140 on average, and my full swing 56 is 120-125.
I have played so long without the appropriate strategy that I always seem to just 3/4 swing a PW if I am 125-135, even though I shouldn't. I really think if I can figure out this part of my game I might be in the Single Digits

ATX: looks like you have your gap pretty well covered.
You may not need to add any club if you have all your distances covered.
BTW, instead of swinging 3/4, you may want to grip down 2 inches and take a full swing. I find I get more consistency with full swings.
p.s. 125 yds is quite a distance with your 56 degree wedge -- John Daly like. What are your distances with your other clubs?
p.p.s. I carried a 64* wedge for about 10 rounds, but found I wasn't using it a lot. Also, you have to practice it a LOT to get any type of consistency (more likely to skull shots, etc.).
p.p.p.s. I moved from a 14 handicap down into the single digits by improving my short game. I just practiced a lot around the green & in the bunker. My weakness became my strength. Now I enjoy bunker shots, rather than fear them.

Single: You hit the nail on the head for me. I have already dropped 7 strokes off my average this year by changing to custom fitted Pings, with the right shaft and grip. I am a big hitter (6'3 280, former FB DE). The guy who custom fit my Pings thought I was joking when I told him I average 300 yards off the tee, until he saw me hit a couple.
Where I absolutely fall on my face is inside 140. I can not tell you how many 40+ ft putts I have faced over the past 5 rounds. Most of those are 40 ftrs for PAR!
My strongest clubs are my 8i (165-175), 7i (175-185), and full swing pitching wedge. I am going to try your tip on gripping down on my PW and giving a full swing.

Cleveland Hi Bore Monster
Adams Tight Lies 3,5,7
Adams idea 4 iron hybrid
Taylor Burner irons 5-PW
Maxfli Black Max 56 and 60 Sand and Lob Wedges
Ping Putter
I'm pretty happy with my bag. The Maxfli wedges are recent additions from a sale at Dick's; got them for $25 each. Also got the Adams 4 iron hybrid recently for only $30 and Dick's. I'm about the same distance with the 4 iron and my 7 wood but there's times you wand and iron and times I really want the 7. When I got the Lob wedge I pulled a chipper out, which I miss at times but I'm really getting better with the lob wedge.

Been awhile since I looked at this thread. Currently, in my bag:
Ping G15 Driver. 12* of loft with a stiff shaft.
Adams Idea Tech A4OS hybrids. 2h, 3h, 4h, 5h. I had to buy the 2h separately.
Adams Idea Tech A4OS irons. 6i, 7i, 8i, 9i, Pi.
Adams Idea Pro Gold Forged Wedges. 50* GW, 55* SW, and 60* LW.
Odyssey White Steel Two-Ball Putter.
I am a huge fan of Adams Golf. I'm also very happy with what is in my bag right now (for the first time). I can't see the need to upgrade any time in the near future.

The only time I don't carry all 14 allotted clubs is when I'm playing on a par 3 course. If you're allowed all of those clubs, why not take them? Note for the record, however, that the only time I walk is on a par 3 course

On the rare occasions I need to hit it 225yds I just grip down on the 3 wood. I can also play the hybrid back in my stance (i.e. deloft it) and hit it 215+. |
I think a supplemental hybrid would have been my choice for you also except for the above. 215 is plenty for a hybrid 3-iron I think.
So, I can recommend carrying 14 clubs but if you walk that becomes a different story. If not, carry all you are allowed. I would suggest two sand wedges for instance; one for the ruff, one for sand. Forgive me if I didn't notice you already have 2.

I carry all 14 clubs but usually only use 13. I carry a 58 degree wedge but rarely use it because I prefer my 52. Both are Ping tour Ws. I mainly use the 58 only when the ball is right by the green and sitting up in the rough. It helps my keep from rolling well past the hole.
