I live on a course in AZ. The crews begin work between 3:30 and 4 am. Holes are cut and greens are serviced BEFORE the course opens. Fairways and landscaped areas are serviced after the greens and tee boxes. All is complete by noon.
Sand is applied to the greens periodically ( every other mont or so) but NEVER during play.

Story time:

I was on the course earlier this week quite early. On a par four (I think it was hole 2), I shot a tee shot that actually went where I wanted. I aimed for the left side of the fairway because it appeared that with the pin placement on the hole, it would give me a straight shot to the pin that I could roll onto the green. As I approached my ball, the greenskeeper rode past me to the green to cut a new hole. I had to sit and wait for him as he moved the pin directly behind the bunker. Had I known the pin was going to be there, I would have aimed for the right side of the fairway.

Yes, I did complain when I got back to the clubhouse.

That's funny you have that story bjohn, because i had something somewhat similar happen to me. I was playing my last hole of the day and hit my approach onto the green. I was about 18 feet from the pin. One of the maintenance guys comes up, takes the flag and the hole out, cuts a new hole (also 18 feet from my ball) in a new position, and replaces everything. He did a fantastic job and he gets done and looks at me saying "that's a new hole, you better drain it. i did a good job". And i did. LOL. for birdie. I've often wondered what would happen if the hole were in the old spot. I shouldve played to the plug to see.
