Hello Everyone,

This is my second summer playing golf and this is my first year I have been keeping score. Yesterday, I had a great round (for me) but theres one ruling thats messing up my putts and strokes.

I played 9 hole since one of my partners is elderly and is still playing strong at 86.

Okay, now for a brief explanation and a question. For 5 holes out of the 9 I have a putt circled because I used a putter on the fringe. I remember all of the balls were within 2-3 feet off of the green on the fringe. Another friend said its a putt, I said its a stroke. Who is right?

And my elderly partner does something with the 7 iron on the fringe, I never tried it

Thanks,

A stroke made OFF of the putting surface, regardless of the club used to make that stroke, is NOT a putt. A stroke made ON the putting surface is a putt, regardless of what club is used to make that stroke.

So, your shots with the putter from the fringe are NOT putts (statistically).

I thought that was the case, thank you for confirmation.

I guess this is good for people with poor green control because the courses I play the fringe is only a quarter to a half inch higher than the putting green. I used a putter everytime. Until I get better ill never make par so i think this is good because its less putts.

it really only matters if you're keeping track of your putting stats....in my opinion it usually makes since to putt from the fringe as the less the ball is in the air, but better control you'll have and more than likely you'll end up closer to the hole putting than chipping from the fringe. From the fringe it's just a matter of figuring out how hard to hit it...
