Can anyone recommend a set of decent but inexpensive irons? I really need to replace the set of used Wilson Ultras I've been playing with. They suck and aren't helping my game any, but I can't spend $600 to replace them.

The Wilson Ultra set isn't all that bad of a set for the price.

Now, I'm kind of a homer for Adams irons. They tend to be relatively inexpensive in comparison to other irons. I currently play a set of A4OS, but as this summer has progressed, I'm starting to realize that they aren't the right style for my game anymore. They were when I bought them, but now I need an upgrade to something that is more designed to take a divot.

Rockbottomgolf tends to have a lot of great specials, and the best deals tend to be clubs that are a couple of years out of production.

Wish I could help you more, but irons are such a touchy subject because so many people have different preferences.

Bear in mind that my irons are really old Wilson Ultras. Believe me ... they suck. Smile

Thanks for the vote of confidence for Adams irons. I was actually looking at a set at Dick's the other day. I liked the way they felt, but I wasn't sure about them. I'll check them out more closely.

Do you remember what model the Adams irons you saw at Dick's were?

Sure don't. I'm wishing now that I did. I recall that they were relatively cheap .. less than $200.

I'm willing to wager that they were the Tight Lies set. I played a set of Tight Lies last summer. They were a pretty decent set of clubs for the price. You should see if they'll let you demo them first.

I saw that set on Rockbottomgolf .. looked okay. I'm looking for something with a wide heel and a low center of gravity. The Wilsons I have now don't have either.

One other thing I thought I'd mention is that I've seen a lot of great deals on Nickent clubs over the course of the summer. Nickent went out of business this Spring, so a lot of retailers have been letting them go at clearance prices. They make some pretty good clubs.

Saw those on Rockbottomgolf too, but had never heard of them.

you should give the A4 set from Adams a look. they are about three years old, but they sound like they are pretty close to what you're looking for. I got my set for about 300 last Spring.

I played Hippo irons for years, pretty decent and cheap ($250 for a 9-4,SW,PW). Might be an option too if you can find them in your neck of the woods.

Might also check on craigslist, I got a nice set of Ping Irons there, for a great price.

Gotta love divorce sales

I'm actually thinking now that the Adams set I was looking at isn't actually the Tight Lies. I checked the Dick's website, and they don't appear to carry that set.

With that said ... I'm looking at a set of Tight Lies on Rockbottomgolf for $99 -- about $120 after shipping. That's a nutty price. I'm so itching to pull the trigger, but I've never demoed them. The only place I could demo them is at my local Golf Galaxy in their simulator, and they don't sell them. I hate the idea of buying clubs without having tried them. This is killing me.
