Went out on sunday and shot a horrendous 90. I couldn't keep the first tee ball in play at all and it cost me 2 strokes every hole that i did it. If you take those first tee balls out, i shot 78. It was an amazing day otherwise. I played with oober Jbeck, who is a standup character i might add, and a helluva golfer. I really enjoyed the day out and meeting 2 new people we were paired with. Got some great advice from beck, so hopefully going into the tournament this weekend i'll be able to make the cut. Playing again today after work. |

What kind of tournament are you doing this weekend? I think we need to start a "Discuss Your Tournament" thread. I'm doing those Am Tour things plus others and there seems to always be something worth discussing, but I kind of don't want to clog up this thread. p.s hit em well.
Also same on the "played with an oober"... sub-thread?
... myself 42/42 today for an okay 84 but some opportunities lost as always. A few bad swings with the big clubs but more of my errors were around the green I think.
Right now my home course the greens are TERRIBLE right now. Usually I'm out walking 9 about every day, but between the course conditions and a whole bunch of slow playing apparently clueless young dudes I can't take it --- so I've been out to another place in the area and rode 18 on a wide open course couple times recently.

Shot an eagle on my last hole today!
Overall, shot a 90 playing a nine hole track twice. On the first nine, I went for every shot. Lots of scoring opportunities with reachable par 4's on this course, but some of them aren't such a good idea. My huge problem on the round was two holes where I took three chips each. What good is getting your drive within 30 yards on a par 4 if it takes you three more strokes to get on the green?
On the second nine, I laid up to a comfortable distance (which is 130 to 150 for me) every chance I could get. The differene was astounding. Not only did I not have any long chips, but I didn't have any blowup holes.
Now for the eagle. On the front nine, I actually pulled my drive a bit to the left. The hole is a dog leg left over some tall trees, and I actually cleared those trees. I ended up behind a tree on the right hand side of the green, so I got this feeling in my head that the green was reachable. Now on the second nine, I was laying up every chance I could get. But for some reason, I had a mental lapse on that last hole. I pulled out my driver when I should have pulled out my 5w, and I nailed that puppy perfectly. I had no idea that I was five feet away from a double eagle. There was no one behind me, so I took all day long analyzing that putt. At the end, I just hit it firm aiming at the back of the cup and drained it.
And I just thought of this now...I need to go get that ball out of my bag.

Awesome Eagle BK.
I almost had one a couple of weeks ago, left myself a tap in birdie Dont get me wrong, loving the birdies lately, i'm getting more and more each round.
Today, played 18 before work, we jumped ahead of a couple of groups and flew round.
Almost shot my best score, on 17 i realized I could, and then pulled my 8 iron way left, 2 flops and then lipped out my bogey putt and took a double.
I could have tied my best score on 18, but i lipped out again.
86 is still good for me, my first sub 90 for a while now.

The funny thing is,
3 x 3 putts
OB on 9 when i pulled it into the range, and the follow up shot almost went ob too, left me a punch from behind a tree (ended up quadruple bogey)
I left a lot out there, and thats not even the 2-3 other crappy shots that meant i shot bogeys on.
50 GIR is unreal for me, 43% fairway wasn't bad either.
2 birdies
Pretty great round of golf, even with the quad lol.

Indeed you're right. It's not like I've never had a better round followed by a poor one before.
So while the putting wasn't great, had just my tee shots been a little better my score would have been significantly better.
So as you say, no biggie.

Hey, nothing to be embarassed about. When you play tournament golf, at any level, you are going to have some highs and some really low lows. Playing "for real" brings all sorts of mental pressure and sometimes we deal with it and other times we crash & burn. I have done everything in tournament golf from hitting a topped drive on the first tee to a hole-in-one. Today I kind of chopped it around but the weather was good and there is always the next tournament.

Well thanks BKuehn -- But yeah it really was kind embarrassing at times out there. But I tell you, I don't feel pressure about it being a "tournament" at all. I'm comfy out there. I just flat out mishit it today. Bad putting speeds, and some random weird topped swings off the tee and such. I double-hit a wedge once, put two tee shots OB in the same backyard back-to-back, etc.
I don't want to sound like a crybaby though. I had a great tourney about 6 weeks back. And it is a privilege to get out and do this so I don't want to sound like a wuss. Sometimes the luck is with you sometimes against.
It amazes me how difficult this game is!

Tournament golf: love it, hate it. But I like the added mental focus and pressure. But not too much. Focus, good. Stress, bad.

Lots of up-and-downs yesterday. Saved a 95. Had a pretty decent 45 on the front, and then I just lost my stamina on the back.
My biggest frustration on the round was hole 15, a par 5. I heeled my tee shot into the woods on the right, which is what tends to happen with my driver when I get tired. It has been a long time since I've had this happen, though, because I usually play every day. That hasn't been an option this year, though, due to other obligations. So I put that tee shot in jail, and I didn't have an escape anywhere. So I figured I'd try a miracle shot since, well, anything at the fairway would be a miracle shot, and it worked. I shot right up to about 175 out, which has been a relatively comfortable distance for me lately. I was so excited as I walked up to my ball, and I shanked it right back into jail on the other side of the fairway.
I think I set a personal record with fringe putts on this round. It seemed I was fringe putting on every hole.

I have a write-up about my golf weekend all ready to go. Should I post it here or in its own thread? I can't decide. It's rather long, since it's four rounds.
ETA: I tried to give it a thread of its own, but the darned forum wouldn't let me. So, it's posted below.

82 on Sunday, 37 on the back nine (par 36)so pretty happy about that. The highlight/lowlight of the day, On the third hole, short par 3 playing about 117yds into a slight breeze, chose a 9 iron. Now 2/3's of the front surface of this green is obscured from view by the bunker that fronts the green. Pin was on the front left about 15ft from the front edge. I don't put alot of spin on the ball so if I do its usually not much and always fun to see. So I hit this shot very clearly landing it somewhere near pin high 10 ft right. Get up there and my ball is sitting off the front edge by 2 ft but sure enough there is my ballmark 10 ft onto the green. Never had a ball back up like that before and of course didn't get to see it
