Played my first 18 hole round in about two weeks, which is a rarity for me.
My ball striking was awesome with all of my clubs with the exception of maybe two shots. The putting is what killed me on this round. Four three-putts, one from inside of five feet. Two other putts I should have drained for a save. And the thing that kills me...my two best shots on the round both ended in penalty strokes. Number three's drive was my only 300 yard drive of the round, and it just dribbled into the water hazard that sits adjacent to the fairway. And on number four, my tee shot missed the pin by about ten yards to the left (was playing the wind), and the slope gave me a horrible bounce right into the red stakes. I was able to escape with bogey on both holes with the first one being one of those putts I should have made.
92 was my score. I left at least six putts and those two penalty strokes out on the course, though.

SteveMM, You are now dancing all around the 100 mark preparing to drop into the 90's. That 46 on the front is awesome. Keep grinding.
Beef, nice score for that distance. Are you punishing yourself?

Thanks but no need to say that, it's not very good, my play was spotty. I hit some real stinkers off the tee and got out of position a few times.
But yes I guess I am punishing myself. Or trying to expose the weaknesses in my game. Used to shy away from playing here but I know its good for me in the long run.

Shot an 89 between two different nine hole courses today. Pretty dang good. But three more three-putts. Blah. Two triples. But six GIR's, which is about where my goal is this year.

Yes. If you can do this, you'll be shooting mid 90s easily.
Every stroke counts the same - no matter if a punch out from woods, 20ft putt, 300yd drive, or just a simple tap in... Play well, play smart and bring it in man.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. Funny thing about that front nine -- what I've been doing a LOT lately is for each nine having 2-3 really good holes (par or maybe a birdie) but 2-3 blowup holes (this usually means double par for me). I didn't have any blowups on that front nine (one triple, a few bogies, a couple of doubles, etc.), so I ended with the score I've been thinking was possible for me.
Sadly, on the back nine I just couldn't seem to get it together. No blowups, but a whole mess of double bogies, only one bogie, and no pars. I think there were two differences between the front and the back -- the back is 200 yards longer than the front, and on the back I wasn't hitting my putts as well. There were 3 or 4 of those holes where I could have easily shaved strokes by hitting the putts that were makeable.
Assuming we avoid rain, I'll be playing four rounds between Friday morning and Sunday afternoon this weekend during our annual golf trip ... hopefully we'll see some good results!

Goodluck SteveMM.
Its hard to keep a good round for the full 18.
You'll do it, you're close.
I was the same when I was on the verge of breaking into the 90s and then i smashed through it.
Keep fighting away, you'll be making us all look bad in no time

97 today on an unfamiliar course (visiting relatives in NW Montana) with some scrappy rental clubs. front 9 was great. back 9 on this course is add-on and significantly harder. pleased overall.

Those add-on 9s can be interesting and frustrating at the same time. They rarely match the front nine. There's one around here that is obviously an add-on that was designed by someone with a very different idea of what a golf course should be. It's like playing a completely different course.

Went out on sunday and shot a horrendous 90. I couldn't keep the first tee ball in play at all and it cost me 2 strokes every hole that i did it. If you take those first tee balls out, i shot 78. It was an amazing day otherwise. I played with oober Jbeck, who is a standup character i might add, and a helluva golfer. I really enjoyed the day out and meeting 2 new people we were paired with. Got some great advice from beck, so hopefully going into the tournament this weekend i'll be able to make the cut. Playing again today after work.

I played last night, after itching and chomping at the bit.
Went to the range at lunch, and was working on my driver, and I just couldn't string together anything, its like I completely forgot how to hit driver.
So when I got to the course, I was brave and hit driver off the tee, and managed a good one, but after that, i was lucky to find the 2nd fairway over. Just completely fell apart.
My other semi strong piece of my game was struggling too, its weird how one weeks strength is the death of you the next.
Surprisingly, I strung together 10 bogeys and 4 pars, with just a couple of doubles and 1 triple, and still pulled out a 91.
Its not great, but amazing considering how many drives were terrible and how I had to scramble back.
On a side note, my hybrid which was an issue a few months back is outright freaking amazing right now, i hit it off the tee on 18 and it rolled out 267 yards.
But I wont give up on this driver, just gotta remember how to hold it again

110 (55/55).
Tee shots were very inconsistent.
Bogeys on the two hardest holes is good, and I'd take a six on the last in good light let alone the near-darkness we finished in.
Still, too many 3-putts, too many missed tee shots.
I'm very frustrated.

Just tell yourself it's a momentary blip in your quest for sub-100 rounds. Nothing to worry about.

Yow, today was the hottest day of the year--talkin bout triple digits--and I spent it walking 18.
How humidhot was it? Well I was dragging my feet out there, going about 2mph, pouring water over myself, meditating, taking deep breaths just to try and stay upright and part of me is relieved just to have left the course on my own feet.
Looking back probably not so great an idea--I feel wrecked right now. Even worse is coming home with a turgid 82. Hit a couple of obscenely bad shots off the tee but hey, 9 GIR which is decent for me. Normally I could squeeze an ok round out of that kind of ballstriking but today the greens were a scary place. I had no feel for speed--which means long putts whacked past the hole and makeable putts left short, scared.
The heat sapped my energy and wilted my swing of course but where I really suffered it was on the green. You don't realize the kind of mental processing that goes into a shot, until you find yourself without normal mental faculties. I would bend down to read a putt then stand up and get lightheaded and confused. Putting is pretty hard when you are disoriented. 36 putts killed my score but I feel like I have a low one in me, just have to catch it on the right day. Today was not the right day.
