assume a par 5. tee shot for 1 to the fairway. second fades out into a red staked lateral. i know its only stroke and not distance like a white OB but i am not sure how to score this?

is it A) drop for 2 and hit 3 or is it B) drop for two - add a penalty for 3 - hit 4? i have been playing option A for as long as i can recall but today heard this other option B. please advise as i can't quite make out what rule 26 is telling me. thanks.

I'll try to explain it as follows.
Shot 1- Drive
shot 2- Into Hazard
Shot 3- Penalty stroke (drop outside hazard)
Shot 4- Play hole out from result of drop.

If you do find the ball in the hazard, you can play it out without penalty, but you cannot ground your club or move any loose impediments. There are a few different options on how to proceed with the actual drop, with the most common being dropping at the point of entry outside the hazard. Hope this helps.

thanks. i had used the wrong numbers in my example. 2 into the hazard, drop 3, hit 4 to play out the hole.
