| My last shot at eagle was after barely reaching a short (300 yd) par 4 green with my drive. Pin was back. 70 ft putt went well past pin....and off green. Poor chip back on. Ended up with a bogey. Learned my lesson. Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Standing over that eagle putt I was already marking birdie on my scorecard in my mind. Reaching the green made me a bit too cockey. I was quickly reminded I'm not that good. I just get lucky every now and then. |
I realize its an old post, but bearing in mind the column that you wrote its interesting what you said in that last part. I agree with the first part, being too cocky was probably your downfall in that scenario--you could have easily played a super conservative putt to take five out of the picture. Anyways, the second part where you say you're not that good, you get lucky now and then. That is wrong, that is beating yourself up for no reason. No need to think that way.

You are right Beef, but as my Mind Play story clearly illustrates, CONFIDENCE controls my golf game, as I think it does a lot of the people who play this game. If you look at some of the people on here---jfurr comes to mind with his recently posted swing video in another post---the guy has a much better swing and ability than his handicap indicates. I feel like most of his problem is confidence. I think that is true for a lot of us. We get it. Once players drop down into the mid-teens handicap range, we know what we are supposed to do in most situations on a golf course, and generally how to do it.....until the pressure is on to do it that one time when it matters. If I could have a nickel for every great high draw (not my natural flight) I have pulled off beautifully on the range I'd be rich. Being able to draw it around a tree when it counts usually ends up in a perfectly straight shot, or a straight thinned shot. In that scenario, "usually" equals lack of confidence for me.
But again, I agree with you. I need to be more optimistic about my game. I'm working on it. Thanks for the encouragement.

This thread has been here for awhile but what the hell. Played a decent round today and was able to sink a 12 footer for my second eagle this year.

Well i can change my answer to within the past week. Played Foxchase to get my mind off the pitiful tournament performance i had this past friday. Hit a 4 iron from 213 out on number 11 for a near albatross. 8 inches for eagle is a nice feeling.

and another. on the way to yesterday's awful 81 (yes awful, if you look at the scorecard) i eagled the par 4 11th hole at crossgates. Hit my drive just short of the green and hit a chip and run all the way across the green and holed it for 2. a bright note on an otherwise poop day of golf.

Friday 7/20, holed out from 125 on a par 5, pull the drive left so I couldn't go for it in 2, chipped out to 125 and made it. I made the comment to my playing partner right before I hit it that I didn't have a club for that distance.... guess I do now.

I suppose I should post about mine. About a month ago, I hit my first one since I was a teenager. It was on number nine at Ponderosa, which is about 290 yards, but it's a steep dogleg over tall trees. After I pulled my drive on the first nine and ended up about 15 yards off the right side of the green (behind a tree), I decided to go for it on my second try. Right smack dab in the middle of the green. I had a five footer for eagle, and I made sure I didn't miss it.

You need to show Adam Scott how to do that!

Well, to be fair, my putt was dead center, uphill, on a slow green. I just gave it a bit extra and hit the back of the cup.

Yesterday, 453yd, par 5, about 75 yds out with a gap wedge, hit the green rolled about 8 ft into the cup. Probably would have been more excited about it except I got a call Saturday from a friend who'd called to tell me about her hole in one.

My first and only eagle was an ace I made in Nov 2010, six months after I started playing golf. I thought I was hot stuff...but my very next round brought me right back down to earth, ha!
So far, my only other chance at an eagle was last year - I made it to the green on a short par-4 with my 3-wood and a lucky bounce (I couldn't hit straight with my driver at that time). My partners made such a big deal about an eagle chance that I choked and 3-putted for par. Doh!
