First off being new to this site, if this in the wrong forum, i'm sorry.

Wanted to know what the oob community felt about the following. If you hit your 2nd shot on a par 5 into a greenside bunker, blasted out, then 2 putted, would you consider this a sand save?

I am of the belief that to make a sand save you must make par or better on the hole, let me know what you think.

No. A "save" requires an up-and-down.

I don't track sand saves so I don't really care but I have thought about this. Or what if you hit a par 5 tee shot into a fairway bunker, lay up from there, reach the green in 3 and 2 putt, is that a sand save too? Doesn't feel like one to be honest.

It's not. A save requires a one putt. If you end up in a greenside bunker on your second shot on a par 5, you are in pretty good shape. If you get on the green and two-putt, you aren't saving anything. You're doing what's expected.

I still have an expectation of getting par if I hit a fairway bunker, so that one isn't considered a sand save either.

A sand save means that you get up and down out of a bunker. It can be for birdie, or it can be for a quadruple bogey. Up and down from a bunker is a sand save regardless of the final score on the hole.

Like beef, I dont track saves, but I would consider this as one, seeing as you did indeed "save" par.

Either way, welcome to the Oob

I'm guessing the consensus is that a sand save would be, from greenside bunker, up and in in two shots? Thanks for all the feedback. FWIW, I have always considered a sand save, anything par or better even in the above situation, guess I a wrong.

Up and down from a fairway bunker would be considered a sand-save as well...just a lot more rare.

I remember one I had last summer that was achieved in that fashion. It's probably the only one I've ever done that way.

How far away from the green does the bunker need to be to be considered a fairway bunker?

i'm not sure i've ever seen a bunker that wasn't obviously a 'fairway' bunker or a 'greenside' one. maybe at that crazy Whistling Straits course in Wisconsin it might be a little hard

Here is the description from the OOBgolf available stats section:

Sand Save: To get up-and-down (in the hole in 2 or less strokes) from a greenside bunker.

Though it doesn't specify it, I always thought it was "to save par".
