Sometimes you have to make decisions on the fly. While I am somewhat versed in the Rules of Golf, I fully admit to having major holes in my knowledge.
The other day I hit a wayward shot. The hole is a 90 degree dogleg right and to prevent people from attempting to cut the corner, O.B. stakes are located inside the dogleg bend. My 2nd shot squirted right of the green toward the O.B. stakes. When I arrived where my ball ended up, it was past the last O.B. stake. If one extended a line from all the stakes off into infinity, my ball was O.B. The stakes, however, stopped short of my ball. There was no other indication that where I lay was O.B.
Generally, one determines the O.B. line, when a line is not painted on the ground, by imagining a line between each stake. Since I was past the last stake, there was no 2nd stake with which to create a line. In my mind I was clearly past the O.B. "line" but since the stakes had ended, I decided my position was still in bounds. If they had wanted to make where my ball lay O.B., they should have planted a few more O.B. posts.
Correct call?
