How do you feel about people fiddling with a phone when they are playing golf with you?

I've been on both sides of this issue, and have kicked myself when I forget to turn off the ringer. I really don't want my time on the course interrupted. I always carry my I-phone though, mostly to check local radar and to check for calls at the turn. But also for emergencies and to call the pro shop about the a**holes that just drove across the green in their cart!(really happened) When other players make or get calls, it use to bother me, now I try to let all those kinds of distractions roll off my back. I've never scored well when I'm pissed. So, carry them, but turn off the ringer. Focus instead on your game, your friends and the fact that you have the time to enjoy both and the world around you. Oh, I can't see myself ever using my phone for keeping score, too distracting plus I want a hardcopy of my score.

I turn off the ringer for emails and calls- and then use the phone for live scoring. when people take calls it really bugs me- esp when it's more than a one off issue. one time i was the guy who needed to be on the phone- and i really hated myself for it. a deal fell through that i needed to try to fix. I was on the phone the whole back 9- it was awful.

that said- if i wouldn't have done it- i would've lost 10k to my pocket so i got over it. that's the hard part. someone wants to enjoy the day golfing but if something comes up- it comes up, especially when golfing during the week.

i just got an iphone and use a program for scorekeeping. airplane mode works just fine because it shuts down phone services.

unfortunately it also shuts down the gps, but there is a jailbreaked app that will let me to turn the phone off without turning gps off.

I haven't played with anyone who uses his phone to do record keeping, it just seems like it would be a huge distraction. The guy who keeps getting calls is really a pain in the neck.

Hey, Kick. If the deal was so important you should have been courteous enough to your group to leave the course and fix the deal. I have had similar situations and bowed out. The guys understand and if they don't, screw em.

If I don't just leave the phone in the truck it gets turned to silent and stuffed in the bag. I check for voicemails at the turn. Period.

Some guy talking on the cell phone has never really bothered me, as long as it's not right next to me during my shot. If he's off in the "distance", who cares. Keep the ringer on silent, check your messages as you want, and if you want to talk on it, make sure it's away from who you are playing with. Not sure why people get their panties in a wad so much over cellphones, yet at the same time those people have them on their person or in their cart. If it's that big of a deal, practice what you preach and leave it in your vehicle. Otherwise, welcome to the 21st century.
